Gulabi
Gang depicts the real story of group of pink sari vigilantes in
Uttar Pradesh who fight for women’s rights and justice, caste
oppression and widespread corruption in rural India. They travel long
distances and encounter resistance, apathy and corruption, even
ridicule. Sometimes whole villages are against them to protect the
perpetrators of violence.
The
film opens with a case in which a young wife has been found burnt to
death and her family blames a fire that broke out when she was
cooking. Pal Devi and her companions believe there is foul play
involved and pursue the case, then the story begins.
The
film allured the audience and scored good reviews because of a
complex story, disturbing yet heartening. Perhaps, that's the reason,
the film was selected at MIFF, which is India's oldest and biggest
documentary film festival. Also, the film has won best documentary
awards in Norway and Dubai.
Despite
it's complexity, the movie reviews are good as director Nishtha
visualizes the hidden meaning of movie's story very well through
'Gulabi Gang'.
