The first "Paro" of Bollywood, Suchitra Sen dies at 82

The legendary Bengali actress Suchitra Sen had been in hospital since December 23 for the treatment of a respiratory tract infection. During the last 26 days, she had been frequently in and out of the danger zone. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee visited her seven times in the past few days.She breathed her last today in Kolkata.

Known as Bengal's Greta Garbo, the actress was the original Paro of Bimal Roy’s classic Devdas. She began her career with the Bengali film 'Shesh Kothay' in 1952, but it never released. Next year she acted opposite Uttam Kumar in Nirmal Dey’s Sharey Chuattor, and the film was a box-office hit. It launched Uttam-Suchitra as a leading pair after which the duo went on to become icons for Bengali dramas for more than two decades.

With a career spanning over 25 years and around 60 films to her credit, Ms Sen was the first Indian actress to be awarded the Best Actress award at an international film festival, for her film 'Saptapadi'at the Moscow film festival in 1963. Sheallegedly refused to receive the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in the year 2005 personally, to stay out of the public eye.

Her contemporaries and people of the fraternity expressed their feelings about the loss:

"An era has ended," saidAparna Sen, veteran actress and film director.

"Her death marks a great loss to Bengali films. I pray so that her family can overcome the grief," said Biswajit Chatterjee, star of Bengali films and a contemporary of Sen.

"None had the ability to step in her shoes," said veteran actor Dipankar Dey.

"Her works will live with us forever," said Madhabi Mukherjee, one of the finest actresses of Bengali films.
