Gulaab Gang movie review

Gulaab Gang movie review

Since, the audience saw the movie's trailer with the two legendary contemporaries Juhi Chawla and Madhuri Dixit Nene facing off for the first time in Bollywood's history, the buzz and anticipation surrounding “Gulaab Gang” has only increased. And, the controversies surrounding the movie has only increased focus on the movie. So, lets begin our “Gulaab Gang” movie review to see how well the much hyped Madhuri and Juhi pairing works in the movie.

Plot outline
The movie begins with Anil Kapoor's narration who introduces us with Rajjo's world (Madhuri Dixit). He narrates how she fought against customs in Madhavpur village to get educated and as she grows up she establishes the 'sangathan' - Gulaab Gang, which not only fights for women empowerment but also for social issues such as food, electricity and water. As the movie progresses, the gang decides that if they want to make bigger impact on the society they will have to enter the politics. And, this brings Rajjo in direct conflict with local mean and self obsessed politician Soumitra. So, who wins this battle of ideologies and principles is the plot of “Gulaab Gang”.

Actor Performance
Madhuri is great in the role of a social crusader, and she impresses with the mastery of the local dialect. Though Madhuri is given more screen space than Juhi Chawla, it is Juhi who dominates the movie with her villainous character. Juhi who is known for her good, positive roles, seamlessly slips into her negative role and is absolutely delight to watch. There is pure menace in the way she manipulates people's emotions in political rallies, ruthlessly crushes anyone who offends her. Divya Jagdale (as Mahi) and Priyanka Bose (as Sandhya) in the supporting roles deserve special praise for their fiery and gusto performance.

Positive points
Director Soumik Sen has done great job is making such an interesting and beautiful movie on a sensitive topic. His movie does complete justice to the women empowerment movement as he uses the principles to drive the movie forward.

Negative points
The movie has too many songs which are distracting and disturbs the flow of the movie. The movie is too good to succeed on its own, so there was no need for so much “nach gaana” from the “Gulaab Gang”. The other thing is that the movie is clearly based on activist Sampat Pal's movement, so it would have been good if the movie producer's had acknowledged the fact.

Verdict
Gulaab Gang is an interesting movie which is a must watch due to the brilliant performances of Madhuri dixit and Juhi Chawla.
