Lakshmi movie review
Nagesh
Kukunoor is one of the few courageous directors in Bollywood who have
the guts to make a unique and challenging movie. Lakshmi is one such
movie which is a frank and brutal portrayal of a real events on the
silverscreen. The movie has been widely acclaimed at the various film
festivals and even won Best Film - Mercedes Benz Audience Award, for
Best Narrative at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. So,
to find how good Lakshmi is, let's begin our movie review.
Plot Outline
Lakshmi (Monali Thakur) who is just 13 year old is sold by her father to prostitution. She is bought by pimp Chinna (Nagesh Kukunoor) and his brother Reddy Garoo (Satish Kaushik), who force her into the sex trade. She twice tries to run away from the hell hole but fails in both attempts. However, a local NGO rescues her and she subsequently decides to file a case against Reddy and Chinna. And in her fight she is aided by the lawyer (Ram Kapoor).
Actor Performance
Monali Thakur who makes her acting debut with this movie, has done a good job. Her natural innocence helps her to slip aimlessly into role of Lakshmi, which she portrays with distinction. The veteran actress Shefali Shah has also done a tremendous job in the movie. Nagesh Kukunoor who is more known for his film making skills, surprises everyone with his perfect execution of the villainous act. He is so good that his every appearance will fill you with disgust and anger. And last but not the least Ram Kapoor in his limited role of a lawyer is also brilliant. He flaunts his acting skills which made him one of the most popular face in the telly world with distinction.
Positive points
The movie shows the raw truth and truly portrays the reality. The direction of Lakshmi is very good and Kukunoor aptly captures the real picture in this movie. The screenplay of the movie is also tightly woven and nicely developed.
Negative Points
In the second half, the director tries to infuse the commercial elements in the movie which minutely dilutes the movies essence.
Verdict
Lakshmi Movie is a courageous and heroic movie. It is an intense movie which will penetrate your psyche. Though, the movie isn't for the ones with meek heart because this movie fills you with aversion, disgusts you too such an extent that you would want to run away from it. Nevertheless, the well crafted story and the raw truth makes it a must watch for those who like to watch critically acclaimed movies.
