Frankie and Alice movie review

Frankie and Alice movie review

Frankie and Alice which marks Halle Berry's debut as producer, was first released in 2010 but for unknown reasons the movie was withdrawn from cinema halls. And after gathering dust for couple of years, 'Frankie and Alice' has been finally released across 125 theatres on Friday.

'Frankie and Alice' is based on real life story of a stripper Frankie (Halle Berry) who works in a seedy Los Angeles strip club in the 1970's. And as eventually time passes by she finds a big hole in her memory, she can't remember completing a crossword puzzle nor spending all her money on one expensive gown in her closet. And the final straw is the wedding of her friend where she undergoes another mood swing and attacks other guests with a knife.

And then she meets Dr. Joseph Oswald (Stellan Skarsgard) who starts treatment of Frankie's dissociative personality disorder. As Oswald diagnoses, we come to know that Frankie is struggling with three distinct personalties in single body.

One, known only as “Genius,” is a scared young girl, who is painfully shy but religiously dedicated to protecting Frankie. The other is named Alice, a malicious and imperious Southern belle who considers herself as white and looks down on Frankie as a chain-smoking, promiscuous tramp.

And every time Frankie goes through personality change, director Geoffrey Sax uses the opportunity to open a window into Frankie's path, thus giving a small glimpse of Frankie's traumatic past and keeping audiences salivating for more.

Sax who has directed number of British TV series, has also done a wonderful job in portraying the 1970's LA in 'Frankie and Alice'. He also intelligently uses Frankie's mixed cultural background to show the conflicting race ideologies and beliefs. He aptly captures main characters part-white, part-black state of mind.

In her pet project 'Frankie and Alice', Movie Halle Berry has done a tremendous job as she expertly handles the biggest challenge of her character which is to handle the shift between three characters convincingly. She portrays Frankie's angst, confusion, chaos and challenges with dexterity.

However, the movie isn't without a blight. Some of the dialogues in the movie doesn't sound realistic enough. And some of the sequences are predictable and don't have the element of surprise to intrigue the audiences. But having said that, it has be asserted that Frankie and Alice is a good movie which is a must watch for Halle Berry fans.

Sandhira movie review rating– 3.5/5
